Afroverse / How we use AI
Imagination leads.
We choose
the direction.
A world begins with an idea. We use AI to help explore what that idea can become, with Afroverse shaping the story and deciding what belongs.

01 / The starting point
The spark comes from us.
Afroverse begins with African imagination: the worlds we want to build, the people who inhabit them and the stories we want to tell. Almag grew from that creative vision. Its direction, characters and the meaning behind their journeys are decisions we make.
We believe AI can support creativity and give an idea more space to develop. That belief guides how we use it, and why we want to be open about its place in our work.
02 / Exploring the possibilities
A conversation in the creative process.
We ask AI for suggestions, explore different approaches and use it to help refine our writing. It can offer another way to shape a scene, clean up a passage or flag a story gap, inconsistency or detail worth revisiting.
Those suggestions are possibilities for us to consider. We choose what fits, reshape what needs work and leave out what does not serve the story. We only approve work we want to stand behind.
03 / From words to worlds
That support includes the visuals.
Our use of AI goes beyond proofreading. We use generative AI to create and refine artwork for Almag, Off the Page and promotional material. Creative direction and established character references guide the images, and we review the results for identity, clothing, setting and continuity.
For example, the first Off the Page illustrations of Aren Tal and Mr Bigg were generated using published Almag artwork as references, then reviewed before sharing. These are imagined everyday moments, clearly labelled as separate from the main comic story.
AI also helps us develop the Afroverse website and reading features, including exploring interface ideas, writing code and checking our work. The same principle applies: we direct, review and decide what to release.
04 / The final say
Approval is ours. So is responsibility.
AI can miss context, introduce errors or suggest something that does not belong in our worlds. A suggestion is never a guarantee of accuracy or a reason to publish it unchanged.
We remain responsible for what Afroverse publishes. Our review includes the story, the visual identity, the language and the distinction between main-story events and playful off-page scenes. If something slips through, we want to hear about it and put it right.
05 / Where we are going
African roots. Infinite worlds.
Our direction is to build a home for original, African-rooted comics and a community that cares about their characters. We want stories worth returning to, a thoughtful reading experience and room for our imagination to keep growing.
AI is one of the tools we use along that journey. The taste, purpose and choices that make it Afroverse stay with us.
06 / Meeting the characters
A conversation beyond the comic.
In our optional, adults-only character chat beta, OpenAI generates replies in the personalities we define for Mr Bigg and Aren Tal. We choose the approved lore, guide the voice and set the boundaries. These are AI portrayals, not real people, and their imagined conversations do not add events to Almag canon.
Unlike our published stories and artwork, individual chat replies are generated on demand and are not reviewed by a person before you see them. Automated checks help filter unsafe content, but replies may still be wrong or miss context. You can report a reply for our team to review.
You choose the spoiler level. Guest chats are temporary; a free account lets you save and resume conversations. Read our chat privacy explanation before sharing anything personal.
Keep the conversation open.
